I recently began experimenting with converting my oil paintings into stained glass. I use windows I get from construction salvage, as well as large mirrors. Unlike traditional stained glass methods, I do not grout my work. I prefer to allow light to illuminate all surfaces of the glass and support ( window), permitting the beautiful jewel-like qualities of the art glass to show through. I lightly sand the wood frames, but leave them with a distressed appearance; it compliments the smooth glass.

Glass on this scale is, as you may suppose, very labor-intensive to work with. I therefore offer limited commissions in this technique. One of the the most amazing aspects of stained glass paintings is that they can be hung outdoors. They should be taken inside when Fall & cold weather comes, or if there are high winds, but they can easily withstand direct sun and rain. Many people commission glass works for their patios, decks or porches; you simply need a reliable rafter or beam to hang them from. All commissions are finished with jumbo eye hooks ready for suspension wherever you wish to have an elegant work of brilliantly hued contemporary art.

These are simply spectacular hung in front of an existing picture or bay window or in an office that has floor-to-ceiling windows, for example. Baths, bedrooms, living room, dining room; any room of your house is appropriate for a stained glass work, in the same way that you'd hang a painting with the exception that you want a light source behind it. I had one client who had lighting installed over a very large stone fireplace and hung the stained glass in front of the lighting; it was magnificent! They make spectacular gifts for special occasions, particularly as house-warming gifts.

The work shown here was hung over a jacuzzi in front of large windows facing the woods, a dramatic and contemporary treatment. Photographing the work has special challeges; the piece shown is very large and extremely heavy; it was not possible to move it much to obtain glare-free photos.

If you'd like to discuss a commission, email me at Circe2001@aol.com for details and pricing. I will be posting additional smaller scale stained glass paintings very soon, so if this is a medium you have interest in, check back frequently !

Thank You For Looking,
Warmly: Susi
